Considerations when picking a spring wheat variety:
Customer Preference: Talk to the grain buyers at your local delivery elevators. What varieties are they looking for? What are their specifications.
How concerned are you about lodging? Are you seeding your wheat under irrigation or in a high moisture area? Then lodging could be an issue for you. Look for a variety with good straw strength.
Do you have fusarium issues? If you are in a higher moisture area or on irrigation, wheat with lower susceptibility to fusarium graminearum will have lower DON disease levels.
Yield: Of course yield is the king! Some varieties will do better in dry conditions and some will do better in higher moisture conditions.
Wheat Stem Sawfly issues: If you are are in an area with sawfly pressures, a solid stem variety will prevent harvest problems caused by stem breakage.
Wheat Midge issues: If you are are in an area with wheat midge pressures, a VB (varietal blend) will protect you from wheat midge damage in your crop; and you will need to sign the Wheat Midge Stewardship agreement to buy the variety.
