There are quite a few differences between the Alberta Seed Guide and Saskatchewan Seed Guide on Durum variety results. Results can be affected by so many variables! So we have decided to show the comparison chart for both guides looking at the key attributes including: grain yield, height, straw strength, disease etc.
Considerations when picking a durum variety:
Customer Preference: Talk to the grain buyers at your local delivery elevators. What varieties are they looking for? What are their specifications for durum.
How concerned are you about lodging? Are you seeding your durum under irrigation or in a high moisture area? Then lodging could be an issue for you. Look for a variety with good straw strength.
Do you have fusarium issues? If you are in a higher moisture area or on irrigation, durum with lower susceptibility to fusarium graminearum will have lower don disease levels.
Yield: Of course yield is the king! Some varieties will do better in dry conditions (like AAC Congress) and some will do better in higher moisture conditions.
Wheat Stem Sawfly issues: If you are are in an area with sawfly pressures, a solid stem durum will prevent harvest problems caused by stem breakage.
