CDC Huskie- Green Peas

SeCan | Technical Bulletin | Performance Data

Move up the yield bar for green peas! New CDC Huskie green field pea yield 107% over CDC Forest, with upgraded Fusarium resistance and lodging tolerance. Prairie-proven for consistent quality.

CDC Huskie is a high-yielding green field pea variety that provides consistent performance and improved disease resistance for Prairie growers, featuring good lodging tolerance and enhanced resistance to seed coat breakage and bleaching over CDC Forest. Released in 2023 by the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan (breeder: Dr. Tom Warkentin), it delivers 107% of the green pea check CDC Forest and 109% of the yellow pea check CDC Amarillo in Saskatchewan registration and regional trials—translating to 110% in southern Saskatchewan and 108% in the north, with an 11–15% yield advantage over CDC Greenwater and 5–8% over CDC Forest across six years of data.

Strengths

  • 107% yield of green pea check (CDC Forest)
  • Good lodging resistance (rated 3.5 on a 1–9 scale, where 1=upright), outperforming CDC Forest and CDC Limerick
  • Medium vine length of 85 cm
  • Medium maturity
  • Medium seed size at 220 g/1000 kernel weight
  • Moderately resistant to Fusarium wilt, an upgrade from CDC Forest's intermediate rating
  • Improved seed package rated good for resistance to bleaching, seed coat breakage, and dimpling

Its strong mycosphaerella blight rating (score of 4.0), moderate resistance to powdery mildew, and good tolerance to Fusarium root rot further bolster its processing suitability and reliability. Overall, CDC Huskie offers a balanced profile for top-tier green pea production across the Prairie provinces.
