Looking for a treat to offer your backyard birds as Christmas approaches? Consider offering peanuts! Peanuts are among the most nutritious foods you can offer — and during the festive season, they can be thought of as a Christmas gift for the birds that visit your garden throughout the year.
Why Peanuts Are Beneficial for Wild Birds
Peanuts are rich in healthy fats, protein, and essential nutrients that help birds maintain energy and body heat during cold winter months. They are a concentrated source of calories, allowing birds to refuel quickly and conserve energy for staying warm and active. This makes them especially valuable when other food sources are scarce, and daylight hours are short.
A wide variety of garden birds, including tits, woodpeckers, nuthatches, and sparrows, readily feed on peanuts. Regular access to this high-energy food supports feather health, strength, and overall winter survival.
How to Feed Peanuts
To attract the widest variety of birds, we recommend feeding split skinless or red-skinned peanuts in a purpose-made peanut feeder. With the shells removed from these peanuts, they are easier for smaller birds to eat. Chickadees, nuthatches, small woodpeckers and many other small birds love skinless peanuts.

Alternatively, if you enjoy the antics that go with Blue Jays and Large Woodpeckers, then you should consider offering whole in-shell peanuts. Jays, in particular, love in-shell peanuts! In fact, you may have to ration them since they will load up and come back again and again, hiding the peanuts away in various hiding spots for a rainy day.
Always remember:
Raw vs Roasted
There are a variety of opinions on whether you should feed raw versus roasted peanuts with differing opinions on either side. However, according to the Wild Birds Unlimited group, there has been no scientific evidence that feeding raw peanuts does any harm to wild birds. We have been selling Mother Nature’s raw peanuts for many years and believe they are safe and healthy for backyard birds. In addition, we test all our peanuts for mold related to aflatoxins to ensure they are safe for birds.
Dealing with Squirrels and Other Wildlife
Peanut feeders are popular not just with birds but with squirrels and other wildlife too. To prevent your bird food from disappearing too quickly, it’s a good idea to fit a squirrel baffle to your feeder pole. Without one, you may find yourself feeding not only a wide variety of feathered friends, but a few determined furry visitors as well.
A Christmas Gift for the Birds in Your Garden
At Christmas, we celebrate generosity — and feeding birds peanuts is a simple way to extend that festive spirit to wildlife. Hanging a peanut feeder is like placing a thoughtful gift outdoors, one that provides vital nourishment during the toughest time of year.
Peanut feeders also bring colour, movement, and life to winter gardens, creating moments of joy and connection with nature throughout the festive season.
