Early trials for CDC 7208 CL have demonstrated exceptional performance, delivering a remarkable 129% yield compared to the industry check, CDC Maxim, in pre-commercial trials. On-farm observations in southern Alberta further support these findings, with yield results consistently performing 5–10% higher than other leading red lentil varieties currently on the market. Notably, the variety shows broad adaptability across all major growing regions (Areas 1 through 4), maintaining its yield advantage even in traditionally challenging zones.
Beyond the numbers, CDC 7208 CL offers significant improvements in the field:
Enhanced Standability: The plants are characterized by a bushy growth habit and stand approximately 2cm taller than CDC Maxim, which contributes to excellent harvestability.
Easier Combining: Feedback from field-scale trials indicates that the crop remains upright throughout the season, making it easier to combine and reducing harvest-time stress.
Familiar Quality: With a seed size and weight (41g/1000 seeds) similar to CDC Maxim, this variety fits seamlessly into existing market channels without requiring adjustments to handling or grading.
CDC 7208 CL is built to withstand environmental pressures with a toughened disease package. It offers improved resistance to both Ascochyta blight and Anthracnose (Race 1). Additionally, as an IMI-tolerant variety, it utilizes the Clearfield® Production System, providing growers with clean and flexible weed control options.
Currently at the foundation seed stage, seed multiplication for CDC 7208 CL is well underway. While the full commercial launch is projected for the coming seasons, there may be limited opportunities for growers to participate in early field trials this year.
This variety is subject to a Value Use Agreement (VUA), which supports continued innovation and plant breeding in Canada while allowing growers to retain seed for their own use in subsequent years.
