BARLEY
BARLEY SEED RATE CALCULATOR

We have an excellent selection of both malt barley and feed barley for sale this spring.

FEED BARLEY

Cowboy: Just released in 2008, this 2 row hulled forage type barley variety has high silage potential and good lodging resistance. It is a taller barley than average and has been designed to provide good yields with lower inputs and to do well on lighter soils. Our experience with this variety is that it produces a plump kernel with a high test weight even under tough conditions.  For more information on Cowboy also see this article: Canadian Cattlemen article: Cowboy Barley

Ponoka: This 2 row variety proves to be a good choice on irrigation or dryland for grain and silage yield and has a good disease resistance package to net blotch and smut.

Bridge: An older variety no longer listed in performance trial data. This has been a proven performer in Southern Alberta and that is why we continue to sell it. Bridge holds its bushel weight exceptionally well especially under dry conditions. This 2 row rough-awn feed barley is suitable for either seed or silage. Bridge has proven to be a solid performer in the field.

CDC Dolly: This 2 row variety has been a favorite with feeders for years.

AC Harper: This 6 row barley has a smooth awn and a plump seed making it good for either seed or silage.

Vivar: This is an excellent 6-row, rough-awn, semi-dwarf feed barley. An exceptional yielder in the field particularly on irrigation. This variety has very good lodging resistance to support the many large plump kernels that the plant produces. (It will lodge though in a high manure irrigation setting). Good silage yields on irrigation too with some customers reporting up to 4.5 Tonnes dry/acre.

MALT BARLEY
CDC Copeland: We have had excellent feedback on this 2 row malt barley. It yields very well in the field, and provides a plump sample and exceptional germination (both valuable attributes to malters). In fact, according to Secan, CDC Copeland is now the second most popular malting variety in Western Canada. CDC Copeland "... occupies 15% of the acreage and made up 20% of the tonnage selected for malting. In fact, reports say CDC Copeland experienced the highest selection rate among all the 2 row malting barley varieties grown in western Canada in 2006."

AC Metcalfe: The most widely selected malt barley in Southern Alberta and Western Canada. This 2 row variety is well proven in Southern Alberta with a number of our customers selling their malt barley straight off of the combine.

DURUM WHEAT
DURUM SEED RATE CALCULATOR

AC Strongfield: AC Strongfield is an excellent high yielding Amber Durum with excellent protein and low cadmium.

AC Avonlea:With good lodging resistance and excellent color, AC Avonlea offers high protein and high yields.

SPRING WHEAT
WHEAT SEED RATE CALCULATOR

AC Kane: AC Kane is newly released in 2009! Seed trial results indicate that it has very good sprouting resistance with a grain protein potential higher than Superb and similar to AC Barrie. It is an awned variety that has short strong straw (just 2 cm taller than Superb) and matures one day earlier than Superb.

AC Lillian: AC Lillian is an excellent yielding solid stem hard red spring wheat that is resistant to sawfly. It is not immune to sawfly, but the variety seems to stand up much better to sawfly than hollow stemmed spring wheats grown under similar conditions. It remains our best tool in the sawfly fight.

Superb: More Superb was seeded in 2006 by Western Canadian farmers than any other single variety of Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) wheat, according to the CWBs annual variety survey. Superb is a high yielding variety in low sawfly settings or on irrigation.

CDC Go: This is a variety that we decided to bring in to provide an alternative to Superb on irrigation. Developed by the Crop Development Centre - University of Saskatchewan, this CWRS wheat has shown a higher yield than Superb in seed trials and matures a few days earlier. Heightwise it is about 1 cm taller than Superb so it also resists lodging. We think this is a good alternative to Superb for people who are looking for a change.

TRITICALE & OATS
Triticale: We have two varieties of Triticale available this year with similar properties: reduced awn expression, standard height, spring tricale intended for use as a feed grain or silage. Also targeted at the expanding ethanol market in the prairies. The varieties include
Tyndal and Bunker.

Oats:We may have some oats available for spring - Call us for more information.
