Farm buildings and Seed Plant at Chin Ridge Farms main yard site. |
Chin Ridge Farms is located in Southern Alberta, Canada, approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Taber.
Nick Barany originally purchased the first section of farmland in 1936. Nick, who was born in Hungary, immigrated to Canada in 1926 lured by the promise of cheap land in Western Canada.
In 1940 Nick married Elizabeth Skiba and they raised two children, Lawrence and Eileen.
After graduating from High School, Lawrence received his Agriculture degree from the University of Alberta, worked for the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, Agriculture Department, at the head office in Toronto. Although he enjoyed his work he decided that the place to raise a family was on the farm.
He and his wife Wima have been farming in the Taber area since 1964. They continued to purchase land and grow the business and today Chin Ridge Farms encompasses 15 sections of land. Almost all of the land is dryland, with the exception of 300 acres of irrigation.
Much of the production from the land has been pedigreed seed. Lawrence Barany has been a member of the Canadian Seed Growers Association and has been producing pedigreed seed for over 35 years.
With the seed production, the next step was a Seed Cleaning Plant, which was built in 1985. This plant has made it possible for Chin Ridge Farms to insure the quality of cleaning of the seed to meet the purity standards of the Canadian Seed Act for pedigreed seed.
All of the pedigreed seed produced and sold by Chin Ridge has been tested for both germination and vigor.
Chin Ridge Farms grows all the seed sold by Chin Ridge Seeds enabling them to observe the traits of the varieties that they sell. They can compare yields, ease of combining, and lodging problems. With this hands on approach, Chin Ridge is better-equipped to recommend varieties suitable to the area.
